This album contains nearly 200 domestic icons from Central Ukraine, which reached the height of their popularity in the 19th century when they decorated every village home. The icons were painted on wood or homespun canvas by amateur village artists (bohomazy). The book also provides perhaps the first study on the work of these nonprofessional icon painters and field notes on the techniques used and rituals associated with their use. The publication is in two languages, English and Ukrainian, and also includes a checklist of works in French.
