Doba bronzy [Bronze Age. Ancient Sculpture and Plastic]
Authors: Nadia Dovzhenko and Rostyslav Zabashta
Design: Iryna Pasichnyk (Kyiv)
The Bronze Age presents the most impressive examples of monumental sculpture from the Northern Black Sea region (3200–900 BCE). In addition to many illustrations and photographs of statuary and small sculptures, the book contains scholarly articles that underline the historical and cultural content of various pieces. These objects reflect the worldviews and religious ideas of their creators, who resided in these territories thousands of years ago. Incarnations of sacred and mythological figures, they testify to the beliefs and ritual practices of ancient times. This corpus of monuments serves as an important—and in some cases the only—source for ethnographic and anthropological research. Collections of ancient sculpture from some of Ukraine’s principal museums were cataloged in order to be included, and many figures in The Bronze Age are here published for the first time.
