About the book
In authoring this study, the main source of which was the oral histories of more than 400 villagers, William Noll strove to convey the “peasant perspective” on the process of transforming civic life in the 1920s and 30s. The research was meant to show the connection between the collectivization of agriculture and the destruction of the wellspring of the peasant culture that existed up until that collectivization, as well as describe the catastrophic process of collectivization in Ukraine as it was seen through the eyes of the participants themselves.
