The research by the famous ethnographer Lidia Orel is devoted to painting on wood in the everyday life of the Ukrainian village in the late 18th-early 20th centuries. This decorative painting was an interesting phenomenon in the history of Ukrainian village culture. Chests, ceiling beams, cupboards, icons, paintings, plates, and window frames, decorated with local ornaments, were widespread throughout Ukraine.

“Painted Wood”, published in 2026, is a reprint of a book from 2003. Even two books. In 2003, we published “Painted Wood” in two versions — in Ukrainian and separately in English. In the 2026 edition, the two languages ​​are combined, but the illustrations are almost the same, as is the design. Designer Iryna Pasichnyk has presented more than two hundred works of art from many museum and private collections for your enjoyment. She presents some works in large fragments to better consider painting on wood.

Lidia Orel’s ethnographic essay touches on the various regional styles of painted objects, their creators, and their original places in the home.

This publication once again convinces us of how interesting and rich Ukrainian naïve painting is.
