About the book

Dedicated to the work of artist Hanna Shabatura, this album brings together her legacy as a painter, as well as letters, recollections, and stories from both Shabatura and her daughter, Stefania. It was Stefania who encouraged her mother to paint when she was already 50 years old. Among Shabatura’s most common subjects are the village she was born and raised in, Ivane-Zolote in the Ternopil region, Easter caroling, New Year’s celebrations, churches, the wonders of the forest, and peasants at their daily labor. In the 1990s, the artist’s work was shown in a series of exhibitions in Lviv and Kyiv. Even today, Hanna Shabatura’s art has not yet been fully studied or appreciated, but she is gradually carving out the space she deserves in the broad picture of Ukrainian naïve art.
