About the book

Over the course of her long life in Canada, Halyna Levytska (1926–2014) collected pieces by famous Ukrainian artists working abroad. She was hoping that Ukraine would gain its independence and would have a need for great works by these masters, for whom there was no space in Soviet Ukraine. This catalog presents high-quality modernist works of many famous 20th-century Ukrainian artists including, Mykhailo Andriienko-Nechytailo, Volodymyr Balias, Roman Baranyk, Alexis Gritchenko, Jacques Hnizdovsky, Liuboslav Hutsaliuk, Vasyl Khmeliuk, Michael Kmit, Anatol Kolomyiets, Edvard Kozak (EKO), Yurii Kozak, Borys Kriukov, Mykola Krychevsky, Vasyl Krychevsky, Ivan Kurakh, Halyna Mazepa, Omelian Mazuryk, Mykola Nedilok, Borys Plaksii, and Andrii Salohub. The catalog also includes the largest and best selection of works by the famous Canadian artist and Halyna’s husband, Myron Levytsky. These works were also purchased by Halyna for her collection. Dr. Daria Darevych of Toronto compiled the catalog, the artists’ biographies, and the checklist of works. Collection of Halyna Horiun Levytsky was published on the occassion of presenting the collection in its entirety to the National Museum in Lviv, the city where her husband was born.
