This book presents collections of floral kilims from a dozen leading Ukrainian museums and The Ukrainian Museum in New York. Traditional textiles from the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th are shown through the eyes of seven contemporary designers who deftly execute ancient ornaments. This publication also presents, for the first time ever in print, the renowned Ukrainian art historian Stefan Tarnushenko’s unfinished foundational manuscript, “Ukrainian Kilims.” Birds and Flowers in Ukrainian Kilim Design is the first in a three-volume set on Ukrainian kilims. The second volume will be dedicated to geometric ornamentation, and the third to artists’ original kilim designs
