NATALKA HUSAR: Burden Of Innocence. JANICE KULYK KEEFER: Foreign Relations
Authors: Natalka Husar and Janice Kulyk Keefer
Design: Iryna Pasichnyk (Kyiv)
Burden of Innocence/Foreign Relations is a collaborative project between two Canadian-Ukrainians, the painter Natalka Husar and the writer Janice Kulyk Keefer, both of whom have made a name for themselves in their respective fields in Canada and abroad. This project involves both an exhibition of works of art painted by Husar, and a “one-of-a-kind,” “two-in-one” book containing images of those paintings along with a book of poems written by Kulyk Keefer: the subject matter is post-Orange Revolution Ukraine and our continually shifting, always-problematic but utterly abiding relationship with our parents’ homeland and the homeland of our imaginations. In its very conception, Burden of Innocence/Foreign Relations is a bridge between various pairs of worlds: Canada and Ukraine, painting and writing, and verbal and visual images.
