About the book

In 1911, the newspaper "Kyiv Thought" sent Oleksandr Bogomazov on an artistic trip to Finland and the result was the "Finnish cycle" of works and several publications in the press. In this book journalist Nataliya Teramae reconstructs this trip through works of art, letters, family memories, as well as her own trips and consultations with local historians and art critics.

"I want us to see in the canvases, watercolors and graphics of the artist not an abstract North, but specific places with a specific history and colors. To hear the sounds of Finland – the sound of the rapids in Imatra, the lapping of the Saimaa waves, the sound of the pine trees in Punkaharju and the bell near the medieval fortress Olavinlinna. I wish that while traveling the world, we follow the routes outlined by our great ones and look at the world through the images and associations created by them.

I also want to restore these lost ties between Finland and Ukraine. Perhaps there are not so many of them. But that's why they are valuable."
