The monograph FEDIR KRYCHEVSKY is the second part of the trilogy conceived by Valentyna Ruban-Kravchenko (1940–2014) — "The Krychevskys and Ukrainian Culture of the 20th Century," in the series "Artistic Families of Ukraine." The author thoroughly analyzes Fedir Krychevsky’s work and demonstrates that he is one of the most important Ukrainian artists of the 20th century. His triumph at the 1928 Venice Biennale is an important piece of evidence for this.

Valentyna Ruban-Kravchenko unfolds her narrative against the broad panorama of the artist’s life: childhood and youth in his native Lebedyn region, studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts, study trips abroad, relocation to Kyiv, and the beginning of his teaching career, which became the life’s calling of the book’s subject. The author’s contextual narrative is incredibly wide. The work brings together a large body of documentary and illustrative material. At the same time, the edition includes works that have only become known in recent years—for example, a collection of Fedir Krychevsky’s graphic works donated to the National Art Museum of Ukraine in 2021 by the Poshtup-14 community.

Against the backdrop of turbulent historical events that were also a period of flourishing for Ukrainian art, Fedir Krychevsky, together with like-minded colleagues (and partly also subjects of this book)—Oleksandr Murashko, Heorhiy Narbut, his brother Vasyl Krychevsky, Mykhailo Boychuk, and others—founded in December 1917 the long-dreamed-of highest art educational institution in Ukraine: the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. Despite constant political pressure and all the dramatic obstacles of that era, Fedir Krychevsky remained devoted to his teaching vocation: he succeeded in training an entire generation of outstanding Ukrainian artists.
