THE KHARKIV SCHOOL OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING Late 19th - Earle 20th Centuries

The album Kharkiv Landscape School: The Late 19th–Early 20th Centuries presents the artistic legacy of four leaders in Ukrainian painting, Serhii Vasylkivsky, Mykhailo Tkachenko, Petro Levchenko, and Mykhailo Berkos, whose work is kept at the Kharkiv Art Museum. It is they who are the ¬founders of the Kharkiv school of landscape painting. A subtle, lyrical grasp of nature and an interest in Ukrainian history, ethnography, and folklore are intrinsic to their works. The introductory essay by Valentyna Nemtsova is followed by a complete catalog of the artists’ works and scholarly commentary that expand our understanding of the Kharkiv school and, in particular, its important place in the achievements of 20th-century Ukrainian art.
