About the book

With this edition we are presenting new series by RODOVID - autobiographic texts of artists.  Malevich is first.

Kazimir Malevich left three separate unfinished autobiographic texts (1918, 1923-1925, 1933) - including personal feelings and memories from childhood, thoughts on artistic problems, reflections, comparisons. Written with talent and excitement, they are very easy to read from any line.

"I remember quite well and will never forget that in first place it was always tinting and color that astonished me, than tempests, storms, lightnings, and also total tranquility after the thunderstorm, night and day, this change agitated me a lot. I also remember how hard it was to put me to sleep or stop from absorbedly observing or, rather, just watching shining stars, heavenly space, dark as a rook". Kazimir Malevich

This book starts a series of editions dedicated to autobiographic texts of artists. Choice of memoirs of Kazimir Malevich as the frist text is not arbitrary - these texts are often remembered in discussions about artist's connection to Ukraine. Furthermore, this exciting, saturated text remains primary source of evidence about early life of the painter. Malevich remembers his childhood and adolescence, family, friends, studies and everything that helped him to become an artist.

Memories of the painter were printed before, but this is the first full edition in Ukraine. It was arranged by Anastasia Bilousova, project coordinator in RODOVID Press. Original language of Kazimir Malevich is fully preserved.

Autobiography of the artist was (re)read by contemporary illustrators that designed the edition - Jenya Polosina and Anna Ivanenko (Seri/graf studio). Their illustrations "wrapped" memoirs of Malevich into an artbook.
