This book of Vira Vovk’s poetry includes the collections Yunist (Youth, 1954), Zoria providna (Lodestar, 1955), Elehiï (Elegies, 1956), Chorni akatsiï (Black Acacias, 1961), Liubovni lysty kniazhny Veroniky (Princess Veronika’s Love Letters, 1967), Kappa Khresta (Kappa of the Cross, 1968), Meandry (Meanders, 1979), Mandalia (Mandala, 1980), Zhinochi masky (Women’s Masks, 1993), Pysani kakhli (Painted Tiles, 1999), and Violia pid vechir (A Viola in the Evening, 2000).

Vira Vovk (Selianska) was born in Boryslav in 1926. She studied Germanics, musicology, and comparative literature in Tübingen, Rio de Janeiro (where she completed a PhD), New York, and Munich. She was a professor of literature at Rio de Janeiro State University. Vovk has won the Ivan Franko Literary Award in Chicago (1957, 1982, 1985, 1989) and in Kyiv (1990) as well as the Blahovist Prize in 2000.
