About the book

On October 9, 2015, we presented our new book, Kyiv Atheneum: Artistic Kyiv, 17th–18th Centuries, a joint project of the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School and Rodovid Press in celebration of 400 years of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The volume stresses the originality of the work produced by Kyiv’s writers, painters, designers, and architects in the 17th and 18th centuries, attesting to the city’s status as one of Europe’s leading artistic centers. Kyiv Atheneum is the product of many years of work by writer and historian Valerii Shevchuk and art historian Yurii Ivanchenko. For nearly 20 years, the book existed merely as a manuscript, but thanks to the initiative of KMBS and the assistance of Diamantbank and Rodovid Press, this October the book was finally introduced to the world. Dr. Viacheslav Briukhovetsky, Honorary President of KMA, has called the book the greatest and most significant gift for the Academy’s 400th anniversary. In ancient Greek, the word “atheneum” meant literary and artistic gatherings or societies, especially those held at educational institutions. The expression “Kyiv Atheneum,” or “Kyiv-Mohyla Atheneum,” came about to describe the group of poets and scientists whom Ukrainian metropolitan Petro Mohyla surrounded himself with.
