About the book

Myroslava M. Mudrak, Professor Emerita at The Ohio State University and compiler of this catalog, suggests looking at Borys Kosarev through the lens of his hometown of Kharkiv in the cultural context of the early 20th century. At the time, avant-garde art was flourishing in Kharkiv in all spheres: the theater, painting, graphic design, and photography. Quite a few artistic groups popped up in the city, a few of which fundamentally influenced the further development of 20th-century art. Kosarev, too, was trying his own hand in various genres. Besides the artist’s well-known work in the theater, he also did graphic work, made collages, worked as a designer, and was both an artistic and documentary photographer.
