About the book

In the history of 20th-century art, Leopold Levytsky is known as one of the key figures in shaping the face of modern Ukrainian graphic art. He made particular strides in the development of non-illustrated engraving, and his body of work contains numerous experiments with etchings, linocuts, lithographs, and colored monotypes. He was a non-conformist in his art and created a large number of rich, formally unified prints that testify to both the breadth of his social and creative interests and his rare graphic talent. The unique quality of his drawing also distinguishes his canvases from others’. Almost all of Levytsky’s creative legacy—more than seven thousand pieces, mostly engravings—is kept in the collection of the Lviv National Museum. Many of his works are also in private collections. This album represents the most complete collection of his works to date, bringing together his graphics, postcards, paintings, sculptures, and also the artist’s photo archive.
